Turns out... Goals CAN’T help us succeed.

I was surprised to hear this from a friend.

Recently, I spoke to Cam, a friend I made in a cafe on my solo trip to Bangkok. I smiled at her when I was working from the cafe, and she smiled back.

Somehow, we ended up having a chat that lasted for hours. Turning days to nights, we went to a bar to continue the conversation.

A bit of backstory:

Cam is an empowered and strong 36-year-old woman who happened to share some golden nuggets with me.

She has been solo travelling for 8 years and living the “nomad” lifestyle for as long as she can remember. And she’s earning a lot while living her best life.

She told me something, and it really stuck with me.

“It’s not the person who has the best goals that will win. It’s the person with the best systems in preparation.”

Think about it.

Goals are the destination, but systems are the routes.

You can have the most ambitious goals, but without a system, you're just wandering aimlessly.  Systems are the processes, routines, and structures that help us achieve our goals consistently.

Cam’s secret? She focuses on creating systems that lead her to success.

She uses a detailed "content calendar" to plan her posts in advance, making sure she produces consistent, high-quality content across her socials.

She also has a strict morning routine that sets her up for a productive day, starting with meditation and journaling.

Everything is systematised, from her morning routines to how she plans her work.

And guess what? It works.

She constantly achieves her goals without stressing over them. She follows her systems.

Imagine if we did the same.

Instead of stressing about our goals, we could focus on building systems that lead us there effortlessly.

Cam’s focus on systems inspired me to think about how we can apply the same principles to our business marketing.

I strongly advocate using stories as part of business marketing tools. Stories are powerful tools, but I know they can fall flat without a system.

Creating a storytelling system can help you:

  • Know your audience better,

  • Allow you to craft your message in a way that resonates,

  • Deliver it consistently.

With the right system in hand, it can transform your marketing.

So, maybe it’s time to rethink our approach.

Goals are great, but systems are game-changers.

Systems propel us forward and keep us on track.
